The local pier on the east coast is home to a working Samui fishing fleet. Most of the boats are family operations: father captain, son crew, mother in the kitchen at the pier restaurant. This is one of those, a 22-seat day boat that runs the same loop the fishing families have run for thirty years.
This is real fishing, not a tourist photo-op. The captain takes the boat to the spots where there are actually fish, typically 30–60 minutes off the east coast in 20–80m of water. You drop a baited line, wait, feel the bite, set the hook, reel up. Snapper, grouper, parrotfish are common; bigger fish (barracuda, kingfish) come up on the deeper drops.
The crew rigs everything for you. Newcomers get a 10-minute briefing: how to feel the bite, when to set the hook, how to bring up a hooked fish without losing it. Kids 6 and up love it; they catch more fish than adults because they fish patiently.
Lunch is a Thai buffet eaten on the boat between spots: fried chicken, butterflied prawns, fried rice, a couple of vegetable dishes, fresh fruit. Soft drinks and water are unlimited. You can BYO beer or whiskey; there's a small cooler.
What happens to your catch: they cook it for you on the boat, the crew keeps a portion (it's how they supplement income), and you can take what you want back to your hotel. Most guests choose the cooking option, and fresh-caught snapper eaten on deck with a cold beer is the right end to a fishing day.

A typical day
- Hotel pickup.
- Leave the local pier for the first fishing spot, about 30 minutes out.
- Bottom fishing for snapper, grouper, parrotfish.
- Lunch buffet on the boat.
- Move to the second spot, often deeper water for bigger fish.
- Final hour: troll for mackerel or barracuda on the way back.
- Land at the pier, transfer to your hotel.
Questions guests ask
I've never fished before. Will I catch anything?
Almost certainly. The east-coast spots are reliable, with 4–8 fish per person on a normal day. The crew rigs your rod, baits the hook, and tells you when to set. It's bottom fishing, not high-skill casting. Kids 6+ pick it up in 10 minutes.
Can they cook the fish?
Yes, on the boat. The crew cooks your catch on board, or you can take it back to your hotel if it has a kitchen.
How rough is the water?
The east coast is sheltered most days, and the boat is large and stable. If it's dangerous they cancel, with a full refund.
