Squid fishing is one of the things the Gulf of Thailand does that nowhere else does. At night, you head out on a 22-seat boat with bright floodlights, drop them just below the surface, and let the squid come to you. The catch is yours to take home or have grilled at the pier in the morning. Six hours under the stars.
The boat leaves the pier at 8pm and crosses 30 minutes into open water. You'll feel the first spot before you see it — the boat slows, then stops, and the floodlights drop. Within ten minutes the squid arrive, and the fishing starts.
The technique is bouncing the jig — you let it sink, then jerk the rod tip up, let it sink, jerk again. The squid grabs the jig with its tentacles, you reel up. First-time success rate is higher than for regular fishing; most guests catch a dozen squid in the first hour.
Around 11pm the dinner buffet is served — same kitchen as the day-fishing trip, but they swap the lunch dishes for sandwiches, fried chicken, prawns, fried rice, coffee. Eat, then back at it.
The second spot is for game fish — typically 23:30 onwards, in deeper water with bigger bait. Mackerel, barracuda, kingfish are what the boat is hoping for. The strikes are harder than the squid; you'll know when one happens.
Best time of year: November–February, when the seas are calmest and the squid are most active. The trip is BYO alcohol — most guests bring a six-pack — and the captain enforces a ten-minute pause on fishing while dinner is served (it gets messy otherwise).

Squid fishing — what does that mean?
Squid are attracted to bright underwater lights at night. The boat carries floodlights it lowers into the water, the squid swim toward them, and you fish with a special jig — a metallic lure with multiple barbed tips that the squid grabs with its tentacles. Easier than fishing for fish; great for first-timers.
Won't kids be exhausted?
It's a long night for kids under 10. Honestly, this trip works best for couples and groups of adults. Kids 12+ enjoy it; kids 8–12 fall asleep on board halfway through. There are bench seats with cushions to nap on.
Is it cold?
The Gulf at night in November–February drops to 22–24°C with sea wind, so layer up. June–September it stays warm. Always bring a light jacket, ideally a windbreaker.
