There are sunset boats on Koh Samui that are basically a motor cruiser with a buffet. The Red Baron isn't one of them. It's a three-mast Chinese sailing junk built in 2008 by the same shipyard that supplies Hong Kong's heritage harbour fleet — wooden hull, varnished decks, batten sails. You don't book it for the sail (Samui's western leeward doesn't get the wind for it most evenings); you book it for the experience of dining on a real ship while the sky goes orange-to-pink-to-violet over the Five Islands.
The Red Baron carries up to 80 guests but doesn't feel like an 80-person cruise. The deck has three zones: the foredeck where most guests gather for the sail-out and photos, the midship covered area where dinner is served, and the aft bar near the wheelhouse. You move freely between them.
Dinner is a Thai set menu — green papaya salad, grilled fish or chicken with cashew, stir-fried vegetables, jasmine rice, fresh fruit, mango sticky rice. Wine and beer are extra; soft drinks come with the meal. Bar runs on standard Samui prices — ฿180 for a Chang, ฿380 for house wine by the glass.
Why we book guests on Red Baron rather than the cheaper sunset speedboats: the alternatives are 30-foot motor boats with a fixed PA system playing pop hits and a buffet wrapped in cling film. Red Baron's a different category — slower, quieter, and the staff actually attend to you. It's also the only sunset boat on Samui where the captain comes out to greet guests in person before sailing.
Best night: any clear-sky day November through April. Avoid full-moon-party nights (around the full moon, every Phangan-bound speedboat is honking past) — we'll tell you which dates those are when you book.

Is this a real sailing junk or a motor boat dressed up?
Real three-mast junk, hand-built in 2008, motor-assisted (most days the wind is too light to sail the whole loop on Samui's leeward side, so the masts are decorative on the eastward leg).
Is it good for kids?
Up to age 8, fine — the deck is wide, life jackets are mandatory for under-12, and the dinner is at 17:45 so they're not hungry-cranky. Past 8, kids tend to find the 3 hours long unless they're into pirates.
How crowded does it get?
Up to 80, but the boat is built for it — the deck spreads guests across multiple zones (foredeck, midship dining, aft bar). Even at full capacity it doesn't feel cramped.
