Elephant Sanctuary

There are about a dozen 'elephant experiences' on Koh Samui. Most are riding camps wearing a sanctuary mascot — the elephants are still chained, still ridden, still trained with bull-hooks. We don't list those. The Samui Elephant Sanctuary in Bophut is the genuine version.

Each session is 4 hours and capped at 20 guests. You meet the elephants individually, hear each one's history (Boon-Si was a logging elephant for 20 years; Pai-Lin was rescued from a Chiang Mai trekking camp at age 60), feed them watermelon and bananas, walk with them through the sanctuary forest, then bathe them in the river.

The bathing session is the iconic-photo moment — and it's also the moment the elephants seem most relaxed. They roll in the water like dogs. The mahouts are alongside the whole time but don't direct your interaction; you do what the elephant wants.

Lunch is a vegetarian Thai buffet at the sanctuary's open-air pavilion. Excellent green curry. The choice to keep the lunch vegetarian is intentional — most guests, after the morning, can't bring themselves to eat meat.
